More About the Program

Over the course of one year, apprentices participate in a competency-based training model that blends hands-on experience with 144 hours of Related Supplemental Instruction (RSI). Apprentices work side-by-side with industry leaders—learning the skills, discipline, and creativity required to succeed in today’s professional music landscape. Each apprentice is matched with a mentor and placed with an employer to ensure personalized guidance and steady growth throughout the program.

Participants earn while they learn, starting at $21/hour with opportunities for wage advancement as they master new skills and competencies.

FAQs

How long does the program last?

This is a 12-month program that includes RSI (144 hours of related supplemental instruction) and an on-the-job placement. Music Editor track is 24 months. We use a competency-based model, so apprenticeship time spans are dependent on employer assessment of growth with a minimum timespan of 6+ months.

Is this virtual or in-person?

Your RSI (144 hours of related supplemental instruction) can be virtual, in-person, or hybrid depending on the track. Many on-the-job placements are virtual but some may require you to be hybrid or in-person in the Los Angeles area.

What will my hours be?

Hours will vary depending on employer needs and what position you match with. Hours can be up to 39 hours a week during employer placement.

What is the hourly pay?

At the time of this FAQ’s writing (October 2025) in Southern California it is a minimum of $19.78/hr. Halfway through the Apprenticeship, MAP will conduct a competency assessment and if you’ve met half of your competency requirements, it will trigger a $1/hr raise. Once all competencies are completed, it triggers another $1/hr raise.

Actual rates will vary depending on the partner studio. Things such as union agreements or internal policies may impact final pay rates.

Which studios and companies take on apprentices?

Potential partners include A24, 20th Century Studios, Amazon MGM Studios, AppleTV+, Lionsgate, MRC, Netflix, New Line Cinema, Paramount, Searchlight Pictures, Sony Pictures, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. Studios.

What will next steps look like if I am placed into the Apprenticeship Candidate Pool?

Once accepted, Musicians at Play will work with you to develop your career pathway and log your RSI progress. Once your competency aligns with studio or company talent needs, we will reach out to you with position details and help prepare you for the interview process. You will interview with the employer and, if selected, MAP will assist in the onboarding process.

Can I use existing school credits toward my RSI?

Yes, you may use previous or current educational course hours toward the 144 RSI requirement. This will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Are there any costs associated with the program?

No, the Apprenticeship is completely free for applicants.
